**For Your Information: A dog that has been "
OFA'd" has been very carefully examined (and x-rayed if a pelvic phenotype is desired) by a
veterinarian qualified by
The Orthopedic Foundation for Animals as able to detect skeletal defects & joint disorders that can be passed from
generation to generation. If a dog is deemed free of the specific disorders that vet is looking for, a registration number is issued by the OFA.

A specific dog's rating can be verified at the OFA website. If you are searching for a puppy that will, most likely, be free of congenital skeletal
problems, ALWAYS ask breeders if the parents have been OFA'd. If so, request their rating and OFA number. If not, RUN! Find a breeder who cares
enough to determine the health and soundness of the dogs he/she breeds and provides to the public.

And PLEASE do not assume that just because you are dealing with a "show breeder" or a "top bloodline" that the dogs have been OFA'd! Many, many
of the top show champions in the country have never been OFA'd. Beauty does not guarantee genetic health...  Nor does the fact that the parents
have been tested, but it is a much better assurance that the Breeder is reputable and is working diligently to produce sound dogs.

CERF indicates that a dog has been examined by a board certified ophthalmologist recognized by the Canine Eye Registration Foundation. A
"CERF'd" Boston Terrier has been deemed free of any signs of Juvenile Cataracts (among other things), and has been assigned an identifying
number.

The veterinary ophthalmologist does not only look for cataracts. She examines the
entire eye, inside & outside, including the eyelids & tear ducts,
for any signs of defect, disease or functional disorders.

Again, no matter the breeder with whom you are dealing: back-yard, "hobby," or show breeder; ask for CERF information. If the breeder doesn't CERF
his/her dogs, find a new breeder FAST! As with the OFA information, you can also verify a specific dog's CERF rating at the CERF website.

BAER (Brainstem Auditory Evoked Response) testing indicates whether or not a dog's brain is receiving sounds via the ears. This test is only
necessary one time in a dog's lifetime, as long as the dog is over 12 weeks of age at the time the test is administered. Inherited deafness is a growing
problem in the Boston Terrier breed, especially in dogs with a preponderance of white on the head and ears, and in dogs with blue eyes.  Even
Bostons with "traditional" markings may be deaf in one or both ears.  Please visit the OFA website for more information about inherited deafness in
dogs.

***For your convenience, the OFA website now posts OFA, CERF, & BAER information, in addition to vertical pedrigrees that display tested
ancestors, descendants, & siblings of tested dogs, as well as links that enable you to view a "plain" list of the certifications of dogs related to the
specific dog you're using as your search target.

The Boston Terrier was developed by
crossing Bulldogs with the now-extinct
English White Terrier.
It is widely accepted that French
Bulldogs were also used at some point.
